Al-Fayoum-Egypt, also spelled Al Fayyum, is a city located in the Fayoum Oasis in Egypt. It is the capital of the Fayoum Governorate. Al Fayoum is known for its natural beauty, historical significance, and cultural heritage.

Al-Fayoum-Egypt:

  • Al-Fayoum (or simply Fayoum) is a city in Middle Egypt. Located 100 kilometers southwest of Cairo, in the Faiyum Oasis, it is the capital of the modern Faiyum Governorate.
  • Is famous above all for its lush orchards: figs, mangoes, lemons and grapes, as well as for more traditional crops such as cereals, sugar beet and cotton.

The city was founded by the ancient Egyptians as Shedet, and was later known as Krokodilopolis, or “City of the Crocodiles”. The Greeks and Romans also settled in Fayoum, and the city was a major center of agriculture and trade.

Today, Fayoum is a popular tourist destination, and is known for its many historical and archaeological sites, including:

  • The Fayum Mummy Portraits: A collection of painted portraits of mummies from the Roman period.
